12/2/09

Didn't sleep well last night, my son had come into bed and was crowding me, so I didn't work out in the morning, opting to go back to bed at 5am. 255 on the scale this morning.

I started a twitter account: http://twitter.com/sixweeksvegan

Breakfast:
Fruit smoothie, banana, strawberries, greens + , flaxseed and tbls nutribiotic rice protein powder
Apple
Lunch:
Salad (Spinach, shrooms, bacos, sprouts, green lettuce, cilantro, salsa verde), tangerine, apple
Pre-workout: red grapefuit, apple
Dinner:Salad (spinach, cashews, scallions, carrots, sesame seeds) + Wishbone asian vinaigrette
Aldi Vegetarian Chili + 1/2 avocado (doctored up with some salsa, roasted tomato taco sauce, garlic, cumin, smoked paparika) + nutritional yeast + flaxseed

Man, workout was rough. 1 hour of kung fu was good, half hour of cardio kickboxing was good, but 20 minutes into the SPRI resistance training, my legs started cramping up. I guess I need to eat more starches during the day.

Salad dressing was a compromise, I was ravenous.

Started out this morning with 45 minutes of spinning and 50 minutes of yoga. I was getting a cup of coffee at the YMCA, and someone asked me how the pool was. Heh, guess I was sweating a little.

small apple
Lunch:
Salad (Shrooms, sprouts, bacos, squash, maters, spinach, romaine) + tomato dressing
banana
Grapefruit
Dinner:
Brussel sprout, leek, cauliflower soup. Green salad with cilantro, salsa verde and fat free refried beans. Apple. Cashews.

Crashed early tonight, didn't have a lot of energy.

Welcome to my six week vegan adventure.

Hello,

Today starts my six weeks of Eat to Live.

Here's the basics:

EAT TO LIVE
The Six-Week Plan

UNLIMITED
eat as much as you want
all raw vegetables, including raw carrots (goal: 1 lb. daily)
cooked green vegetables (goal 1 lb. daily)
beans, legumes, bean sprouts, and tofu (1 cup daily)
fresh fruit (at least 4 daily)
eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes

LIMITED
not more than one serving (1 cup) per day
cooked starchy vegetables or whole grains
(butternut or acorn squash, corn, potatoes, rice, cooked carrots, sweet
potatoes, breads, cereals)
raw nuts and seeds (1 oz. max. per day)
avocado (2 oz. max. per day)
ground flaxseed (1 tablespoon per day)
OFF-LIMITS
dairy products
animal products
between-meal snacks
fruit juice, dried fruit

Wow. So a little bit about myself.

I'm 32, I've had hypertension for the last ten years. I've been through all sorts of tests, but it's pretty much undiagnosed as the cause. I did show to have some white-coat hypertension on my 24 hour study.

6'2" currently around 260lbs. I work out 3-4 times a week when I'm not sick. I like to lift weights, (Stonglifts 5x5), do yoga, martial arts, mountain biking and spin classes. I've been in the top 10 for cardio minutes and weight lifted a couple of times this year at my local YMCA. I'm not svelte, but I carry my weight really well.

My wife has been diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, and has started Diomox. We're doing this diet for her, with the side effect of me hopefully doing well.

I plan to use this blog to let people out there who are thinking of following Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live book.

My former typical diet looked like:

Breakfast: Protein shake (Whey protein, banana, nuts, almond milk, creatine)
Snack: Greek yogurt + apple
Lunch: Leftovers + salad. (leftovers usually were chicken + starch or pad thai or something)
Snack: Oranges + cheese or smoothie or chips/hummus
Dinner: Protein, veg, starch

+ 3-4 beers at night + chips and salsa/hummus or potato chips

I know where my downfall was.
